Ecomedia: The Integration of Media with Emerging Technologies and Information Structures that Describe and Model Global Ecological Systems
About the Research
Ecomedia: The Integration of Media with Emerging Technologies and Information Structures that Describe and Model Global Ecological Systems (working title) explores developments in media art related to the computerized interpretation of complex data sets describing and modeling the natural world. The author is interested in the ways that artists have historically straddled art and scientific development and are currently working in the area in-between art and science. Also important to the research is the political dimension of this work as advocating for the preservation of the natural world.
About the Researcher
Andrea Polli is a digital media artist living in New York City. She is Director of the Integrated Media Arts MFA Program at Hunter College. Her projects often bring together artists and scientists from various disciplines. She works in collaboration with atmospheric scientists to develop systems for understanding storm and climate information through sound (a process called sonification). Recent collaborations include: a spatialized sonification of highly detailed models of storms that devastated the New York area; a series of sonifications of actual and projected climate in Central Park, and a real-time multi-channel sonification and visualization of weather in the Arctic.
