About the Research Digital networking technologies can help communities maintain and manage their shared knowledge and resources. Drawing from my previous projects with communities and networked mobile technologies [1], He will research how digital tools can help independent networks of small-scale farmers maintain a shared, dynamic network of common knowledge and information. In the face of the current unsustainable farming policies and globalized markets, which have become predominant, a citizen movement towards Food Sovereignty becomes critical. According to the Declaration of Nyéléni [2], "Food sovereignty is the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems." These rights clearly imply an understanding of ecology, agriculture and food as commons. So far, the Food Sovereignty movement has included farmers, peasants, fisherfolk, indigenous peoples, and environmental organizations; yet it can be expected that other groups of people with no previous direct relation with farming may want to join in the near future. These newcomers' lack of experience may find support in communication technologies, including mobiles devices and networks. Through the usage of well-known "Web 2.0" techniques, such as tagging or information visualization and mapping, the community memory will become a tool for investigating and modelling the community's activity and dynamics and also for supporting the management of the community's resources. About the Researcher Eugenio has an undergraduate Degree from Mexico and a Masters in Digital Arts from the Universidad Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, and is currently co-directing this same program. He was also trained in computer science at the Sony Computer Science Lab, Paris. Since 2003, he has worked with the Catalan Artist:Antonio Abad, on a series of mobile communication projects involving communities in different parts of the world. By giving these communities tools like smart and training them for the publishing of unfiltered multimedia contents, they become empowered and more socially included in society.
